2-minute setup · works every tournament · no room code needed

Add DebateClock to your Tabroom paradigm

Paste one link into your Tabroom paradigm. Every debater who reads your paradigm before the round clicks it and joins your timer room automatically — same link, every tournament, forever.

Why this matters

Most judges start each round by saying "give me a second to pull up a timer" or asking the debaters to time themselves. The paradigm link eliminates that friction entirely. Debaters read your paradigm in the tab bay before the round. They click the link, join your room, and the debater display is already open on their laptop when the round starts.

📋

Debaters come prepared

They read your paradigm before the round. Your timer link is right there. They join before you sit down.

🔗

Same link every time

Your personal room never changes. One link in your paradigm works at every tournament for the entire season.

📱

Zero setup per round

No room code to share. No QR code to scan. Debater opens the link, judge opens the app. Round starts.

Setup — 2 minutes

1

Find your personal timer link

Your link uses your name exactly as it appears on Tabroom — lowercase, hyphens instead of spaces. Examples:

debateclock.org/j/alex
debateclock.org/j/sarah-chen
debateclock.org/j/coach-miller

The room is deterministic — the same name always opens the same room, every time, on every device.

2

Open your Tabroom paradigm

Log into Tabroom.com → click your name in the top-right corner → click Edit Paradigm. The paradigm editor opens as a text field.

3

Paste your link at the top

Add one line at the very top of your paradigm — debaters see this first. Keep it short so they actually click it.

Your paradigm (example)
⏱ Timer: debateclock.org/j/your-name — click before the round starts [Your actual paradigm content below...] I flow on paper. I value clear line-by-line refutation...

The single line at the top is enough. Debaters in the tab bay will see it while reading and click it before you enter the room.

4

Test it before your first tournament

Open your paradigm link on your phone. On a second device, open the same URL. Both should connect to the same room instantly — no room code needed.

On tournament day: open debateclock.org/app/ on your phone as usual. The debater's display will already be connected when they click your paradigm link from their laptop.

How the paradigm link works

The URL debateclock.org/j/your-name is a permanent room code derived from your name. It always resolves to the same 6-character room. No account is stored — the room is generated client-side from a hash of the name, so it's the same on every device without any server lookup.

This means: the link never expires, never requires renewal, and works even if you haven't opened the app yet when the debater clicks it. When you open the app on your phone, your room is already waiting with any debaters who joined from the link.

Frequently asked questions

What name should I use in the link?
Use whatever name debaters would recognize from your Tabroom profile — typically first name or full name, lowercased, with hyphens instead of spaces. The exact name doesn't matter as long as you use the same one every tournament. debateclock.org/j/alice and debateclock.org/j/alice-smith are different rooms.
Do debaters need to create an account?
No. DebateClock requires no account for anyone. The debater clicks the link, the display opens in their browser, and they're connected. No signup, no install, no permissions beyond a browser.
What if two judges have the same name?
Add a middle initial or use your full name to make it unique — debateclock.org/j/sarah-m or debateclock.org/j/sarah-chen. Any string that's unique to you works.
Will this work at every tournament all season?
Yes. The link is permanent. Paste it once in your paradigm and it works at every tournament without any changes. The room is re-created fresh each time — there's no stale state from previous rounds.
What if the debater's school blocks the site?
The debater can use their phone instead — DebateClock works on any device with a browser. The display is optimized for mobile. Alternatively, the judge can share the room code manually as a fallback.
